Frank Lautenberg dies; was US Senate's last WW II vet

Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ), the oldest member of the US Senate, has died at the age of 89. Lautenberg, who had already announced that he would not seek re-election was one of the most liberal members of theFrank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) smiles after the final votes before the Senate leaves for a five-week recess on Capitol Hill in Washington. Frank Lautenberg, the New Jersey Democrat who was the U.S. Senate's last surviving World War II veteran, died Monday of viral pneumonia, his office announced.TRENTON — Politicians and other officials offered their reaction to the death of U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg this morning. Lautenberg, the New Jersey Democrat who served five terms in the Senate, died of complications from pneumonia at age 89.The numbers are striking. As recently as the 111th Congress, which ended January 3, 2011, there were 26 members of the Senate who were veterans. Today, twelve of those 26 are gone, due to a variety of causes from death to retirement to electoral defeat.
