Cluster of earthquakes rattles Southern California

Experts said the cluster of earthquakes that began Tuesday night are far from out of the ordinary for Southern California, but that the region has not seen this type of sequence in a few years. At a news conference Wednesday morning, Kate Hutton of theHutton said there were two 4.5-magnitude earthquakes, one on Tuesday night and another on Wednesday morning, as well as a 3.4-magnitude quake. Seismologists are trying to determine whether they were part of the Whittier fault - they did strike close toFrohlich identified the epicenters for 67 earthquakes — more than eight times as many as reported by the National Earthquake Information Center — with magnitudes of 3.0 or less. Most were located within a few miles of one or more injection wells,Some called it an "earthquake cluster," others a "swarm." Seismologists used the term "earthquake sequence."
